Hi everyone, here I am going to talk about therapeutic massage and how it relates to movement specifically.
First there are some foundations to cover. The body moves due to muscular contraction. There is another piece to movement being explored more known as fascia. Fascia is similar on the body as the stitching of your favorite sweater. Pulling tight on one piece pulls tightly on the rest of the fascia, just as it does the fabric. Bunching up of an area makes moving difficult just the same. Optimal movement requires muscles and fascia to move in sync with our will. Therapeutic massage helps improve optimal movement.
During our daily lives, we all have certain movement patterns and habits. How we get out of bed, how we walk, which hand we use to turn the wheel or drink our favorite cup of coffee. Over time these movement patterns encourage the body to only move in those ways.
This is great as long as we purposefully move in various ways and directions, keeping the body pliable and movements easy. This is also great in terms of athletic performance, and ease of going about our daily lives.
When is this not good? Muscle memory is not good when we have inefficient movement patterns, or limit our own movement by only performing certain actions and always using the same hand to drink our coffee, brush our teeth, or comb our hair. This is the reason athletes cross train as well, to keep the body limber and used to various movements to train the fascia.
Over time, doing the same movement can cause muscles to tighten in a specific pattern. Driving and typing all day shortens our chest muscles. This can make other movements more difficult, throws the body out of alignment, and pulls on other fascia causing pain and tension elsewhere in the body.
Fortunately, there is a solution. Therapeutic massage!
By systematically reviewing the body both static and in motion, I can effectively create a specialized plan for you! The techniques used as well as specific plan is always individualized. Moving more now means hurting less later in most cases. Muscle soreness and tightness limits movement and causes pain. Therapeutic massage sessions can eliminate that tightness, removing the pain along with it.
Do not stay stuck in movement patterns that do not work for you long term. Swing on monkey bars, dance, and have fun within your body’s limits to keep your body moving optimally. When it is not moving optimally or painful, see me and receive your therapeutic massage. A holistic approach, working with you to meet your goals, and improve your quality of life.
McClure Bodyworks is always about hurting less, moving more, and living better.
